Why The Moon Shines at night

In the beginning, ta the dawn of time, God created the world’s first man and the world’s first woman. He man was called Andraw, whose name means “the sun” and the man was Bulan, whose name means “the moon”. Andrew’s body was covered with blazing, hot fire, to symbolize his superior power and his bravery. The bright and powerful flames from Andrew’s body, could be seen for miles and miles. Bulan’s body was cool and gave off a mild, bluish glow, to symbolize her gentleness and her calm temperament.

For many years, Andaw and Bulan were very happy together, but being the only two for them. And so they decided to have a child. After a few months, Bulan gave birth a beautiful baby boy. The baby boy was neither hot like his father, nor cool like his mother, but somewhere in between. Andaw and Bulan were both very happy, BUT Bulan forbade her husband Andaw from touching her child for fear that his touch would burn their new son. Andaw was very sad that he could not hod and cuddle his child, but was content to love him from a safe distance.

One day, Bulan was busy ain the fields collecting vegetables for dinner. Her sleeping baby son was alone in the house, far away from the fields. The baby the woke up, hungry and thirsty and began crying for his mother. But Bulan was so far away in the fields that she could not hear the desperate cries of her baby son. The frustrated Andaw could see that the baby was so agitated that it was about to fall from its cot and injure itself. Andaw shouted to his wife, but the busy Bulan did not hear his cries for help. Himself and grabbed the baby before it hit the floor. But the hot flames on Andaw’s hand, burned the baby and it died instantly.

When bulan returned from the fields and saw that andaw had killed their baby son, she went wild and began arguing with her husband for being so careless. She could never forgive Andaw for what he had done. The only solution was for them to separate forever. So that their did not die in vain, Bulan cut her baby into many pieces and threw them high in the sky. These pieces of the baby became the planets, including the planet earth.

Before Bulan  left him, Andaw wanted to embrace her child and tell her how sorry he was for the death of their son and that he never meant any harm to come to their child. He would do anything to gain Bulan’s forgiveness and to their son back to life. But  Bulan would not forgive Andaw and told him that they must stay apart for all eternity and must not even meet one Another ever again. “from now on,”said Bulan, “I will sleep during the day and come out only at night.” You, Andaw must sleep through the night and come out during the day. That wauy, we will still see one another again. “ those were Bulan’s last words to Andaw and she left him. Andaw was sad to see his wife go but knew that her suggestion was right one.

And so, everyday since that time, Bulan has come out everynight and her husband Andaw has come out  during the day. And they have never seen one another to this very day.

The Tambuli

Nanoy sat one of the big boulders on the hillside overlooking extensive rice fields below. To hi ears came the sound of tambuli, long and mellow. Three times it sounded and he knew that it was Kuyang Endong who was blowing the horn, calling back the carabao and cattle from beyond the creek.

How he longed to have a horn which he could call his own – one which he could carry along with him and show to his friends and playmates! He had long dreamed of having one which he could blow as much as he wished. But his father had time again said that was too young to own a tambuli. To hill people, the tambuli was a precious piece of property. They used it for gathering their domestic animals together, and, on stormy nights, in locating a lost or belated member of the family.

He recalled the day when he received a severe scolding and spanking from his father on account of tambuli. He had sneaked into his father’s bedroom and, placing a chair near the wall and standing tiptoe on it, he reached for the tambuli which was hanging from a bamboo peg. He had carefully taken it down, and out of the house, and once in the field, began blowing it with all his might. The sound which he produced scared the carabaos and caused them to run away instead of gathering together. His father, coming home from the cockfight, caught him unaware, and putting him over his knee, beat him till he shouted for mercy. He was given a long sermon and made to promise not to touch the tambuli again.

But Nanoy was not daunted by this. So strong was the fascination of the tambuli over him that the spankings and the warning did not deter him from learning how to blow it properly. He continued to his father’s room and get the tambuli from its hanging place. He would sit for hours softly blowing it. Patience brought him his reward, foe he soon found himself capable of producing the desired sounds. But this made him long all the more for tambuli which he could claim as his own.

The shrill voice of his mother stirred him from his silent reverie and sent him scampering down the narrow path. He found his mother standing at the head of the stairs, shading her eyes with her hand.

“Where have you been, Nanoy?” She greeted him. “I have been calling for you a long time.”

“I was just down there, Inay,” Nanoy replied with downcast eyes.

“Run down to Dikong Juan’s house.” You are wanted there. They have killed a cow and Dikong Juan wants you to help in skinning it,” came his mother’s command.

Nanoy’s face lighted up with a smile. There was a twinkle in his eyes. a cow. A sudden thought entered his mind, which made him happy. Away he went, his legs carrying him at top speed, while his heart beat in wild expectations. He found the house in great excitement. Everyone was busy. In the yard lay the cow with its throat cut.

“Get the sharp kampilan from the batalan,” commanded his Dikong. With what ease and willingness Nanoy did all the work, for his father was a believer in the need of preparing children for the struggle for existence in early life. How skilfully helped remove the hide! How adept he was I cutting! His hands were guided by the great purpose brewing in his mind.

At last the work was ended. The beef had been distributed among the different members of the family. The things which had been used were cleansed, and the space where they had worked was cleared of refuse. Nanoy blushed and fumbled with his clothes. But his eyes were set on the pairs of horns which hung dangling from the beam of the shed in front of the house. His Dikong divined his thoughts and patted him on the back, smiling.

“So you want one of those horns, eh?” his Dikong said, looking at him in the face.

Nanoy nodded.

“Go and get it then,” Dikong Juan said.

Nanoy  did nt wait for a second command. He was off, and in a moment was standing on the bamboo bench beneath the shed where the horns hung. He looked them over and after much hesitation made his choice. Jubilant he ran home after thanking his Dikong, and went to fetch his sharp knife and his father’s chisel. He knew where the chisel was hidden, and did not meet with any difficulty in obtaining it.

“Where did you get this tambuli?” asked his mother. “How many times must ypu be told not to play with this?”

“I made it, Inay,” answered nanoy timidly.

“Go upstairs and stay there. You will ear from your father when he comes home,” she said.

“But Inay, I did not….” protested Nanoy.

“Shut up and do as I tell you,” interrupted his mother.

Nanoy was very sad after that. His sorrow heightened when he saw his precious tambuli handed to tandang sora as present. How he wanted to burst out in protest; but caution got the better of him, and he kept quiet. He became secretive and often wore a guilty look.

“I wonder what the child is up to now,” his mother once remarked.

But no amount of spying or scolding could make Nanoy come out into the open. He became still more mysterious in his actions.

One night a sudden storm descended over the hills. The farmers, including Nanoy’s father, were all out in the fields, belated by a season’s heavy work. It became so dark that it was impossible for them to find their way home without a light or sound of a tambuli to guide them.

The women’s lamp were blown out as fast as they were out infront of the windows.

“ A tambuli…..A tambuli……” was everyone’s  cry.

But who had a tambuli? The farmers had taken their tambulis with them and none were left in the little settlement.

Nanoy sat at the head of the stairs staring into the darkness before him. His thoughts was of his father who was out in the storm. His mother sat beside him, his thoughts in line with his.

“Nanoy,” she said, misgivings in her voice, “how I wish you had your tambuli tonight.”

“if I had, Inay, would you let me blew it?” asked Nanoy peering into her face.

“it would help your Itay find his way home,” she replied.

“would you take my tambuli again, if I had one Inay?” he asked.

She shook her head. Nanoy stood up abruptly and was gone. After a while he came back and stood beside her mother. A long, mellow sound issued forth from the tambuli eagerly pressed to his lips.then came another, longer and louder. From the distance came the reply. On and on, again and again, Nanoy blew his tambuli, each timeto be answered by his father. The sound of the tambuli from the field came nearer and nearer.

“My son, you have done well this night,” said his father, clasping Nanoy in his arms.

Nanoy said nothing, but held his tambuli, made of the butchered cow’s other horn,closer to his breast.

What are the roles of a teacher?

        With my interview with the five teachers in St. Paul University I found out that they share different reasons and passion of becoming one; and of course they have been influenced by the society, successful and goal oriented people.

According to Mrs. Mariles Aquino a faculty member of the School of Arts and Sciences; she have chosen teaching because its innate in her to talk as she talks she’s able to share her knowledge to others, and teaching for her is a passion. “You cannot just say- I will teach, rather as you go along you’ll find out that this profession entitles you to love, to have patience and to care.  You’ll soon become a teacher and its in you to find out why am I telling al this things”

Dr. Wilma Lagitao shares almost the same thing she loves teaching and it’s a great passion for her to do so, it’s also a way for her to have an access to share God’s Love. Ms. Kristne Romero a faculty from the School of Accountancy and Business; said that she had chosen teaching because she wants to grow professionally; it helps her develop her skills in communicating and developed her personality at the same time. Ms. Glyvee Gay Panganinban, RND. Also a faculty from The School of Accountancy and Business said that she have chosen this profession because she felt the divine call for her to do so, she added that she loves teaching and why is she in this struggles because she wants to affect lives. Their answers may somehow affect our perception of the profession we call “teaching” but neither it gave us a wider and ultimate understanding of how is to teach as they said it’s a passion.

Sometime in our lives we find people who in a way or two affects our decisions and eventually turn our world upside down; some polish us and makes us a better person  but sometimes there are people who totally change us from the field of misery to the world of paradise like happiness to success . These people no matter how short is their existence in our lives remain to live and grow in our hearts through the pieces of advice and mother like ways of dealing with us, their voices echo in our entirety, someone who helps us shape ourselves and their memories remain as we live. Some of the influential people Mrs. Aquino shared is  Dr. Concepcion Doyugan; who she felt has a great belief on her ability. Second her husband; who pushes her to do intellectual things. Third is her sister who is also a faculty from SAS, who supports her in all aspects. Dr. Lagitao faithfully said that it was her mother who had been a teacher in a Sunday class, her brother who is a teacher by profession and her Filipino teacher when she was in Elementary. Ms. Romero was also influenced by the different people Dr. Pamittan is one, her Co- Teachers and The students. “ their willingness to impart and handling the Job, their effort on creating a good working atmosphere and their ways of mentoring people”. While according to Ms. Panganiban it was her mother as she is a teacher by profession too, the SPC sisters who inspired her, and most of all JESUS; she believes HE is a great teacher. “ I just felt the calling” she shared.

As we Enter a particular School or University we find another environment to feed our selves, we find new delicacies of people some may be salty, others are spicy while many are sweet it’s in us how are we going to approach and deal with them. As we separate or depart from these people we’ll find ourselves living the same ways we did as we are in their care. The most influential person in these days is our teacher, we find her the best person because she knows a lot, she was respected by others and she remains to be a hero; someone who will protect us no matter. We find ourselves crying in her lap as we’ve been hurt. And as we arrive home our parents notices that what we learned from her are the same things we are applying at home- funny right but it is true.

Mrs. Aquino said that it was Dr. Concepcion Doyugan because she continuously supports he, she taught her to teach with a smile, give patience to studentry of SPUP. And all because she was her mentor; someone who listens with all her ups and downs.  Dr. Laguitao humbly answered it was her mother because she had been a model for her. Ms. Romero proudly answered that it was Dr. Mercedita Pamittan because she had been a mother to her whose support and understanding gave her a hint to continue and serves as challenge for her to continue. “What and who I am today were all because of her” she added. While Ms. Panganiban loyally answered that it was the SPC sisters because they had been her teachers before.  “They teach patiently and more on values”.

       

        Teachers are mostly loved by their students, why? Ask yourselves. The answer would be in the deepest recess of your memory that you would never want to lose, that for sure you would even want to share to your future grandchildren. Teachers are loved and remembered simply because eighty percent of our daily lives had been with them especially in our Elementary and Secondary years. Somehow we better able to share our feelings, pains, and “Kilig moments” with them because we feel at ease telling them everything knowing they wouldn’t get angry at the end instead gives us pieces of advice and tolerating our feelings in the mode we most wanted. On the other way there are times we can’t forget teachers who had mark a negative things in us. The first teacher who cause tears flow, and the teacher who had put us into shame. In anyway the teacher’s intention must have been good, but since we had taken it negatively anger and dismay grew in our hearts. Mrs. Aquino said she doesn’t like teachers who are lazy and teachers who treat students inhumanely. Dr. Laguitao specified her grade three teacher who’s a paulinian herself who also became very strict that she doesn’t treat everyone fairly. “She punishes the whole class by whipping us” she said remembering the moments she spent with that teacher. Ms. Panganiban bitterly answered that she really doesn’t want teachers who are lazy justifying her answer she said “I can’t see any effort with these types of people, unapproachable, brutal, and putting students in shame during classes. She also doesn’t want authoritative teachers who believe they know everything.

        Going out of your classrooms we are expected to perform what we learned. We, at the same time given the chance to see the roles of our teacher in our lives. Mrs. Aquino said that “a teacher is also a mother, a friend, a role model in which at the end of the session the students learned and able to apply it in what we call LIFE.”

Dr. Laguitao answered that a teacher is a role model of GOD’s Love, one who is with high in righteousness and who have all the traits at the book of Galatians 5:19-12.

While Ms. Romero said a teacher is an Educator, a mentor, a shepherd, and a secondary parents. And last but not the least Ms. Panganiban answered a teacher is someone who teaches, guides, supports, learns and listens to the students and the needy.

Our experiences in life especially in school greatly affects our perceptions, we find good and not so good teachers, we were better able to distinguished terror and humble teachers, some could either be found as approachable and many are not. With all this experiences we sometime find ourselves bulliying this types of teachers we tend to name them according to how we see them, somehow because we hate them. All this things contribute to our satisfaction

Who is the teacher?

        If you are going to ask me, who is the teacher I idolized most, what are the characteristics? I would certainly answer you that I like teachers who have passion for the profession. Someone who works not only for the benefits she may get from the job but of course the knowledge she may share as a teacher.

        If I will be a teacher someday, I would follow all the teachings and pieces of advice my teachers have give.

I’ve succeed from the previous ways of my teachers how they passionately teach, how they give their time, how they sacrifice for the benefit of their students because they do believe that these students are the hopes of the humanity and the world.

Like Mrs. Mariles Aquino, I saw her passion on the teaching profession. I saw how she manage to prepare the lesson to make her students better understand. She is one of the teacher I idolized in fact, she is one teacher I would not hesitate to share problems with and for this reason I do believe that she can live the life of a real teacher.

What are the things she does?

        Mrs. Mariles Aquino, a speech teacher. She actually gives time to her students to ponder on the lesson and she gives time for clarifications. Actually, she has a wide room for comments and suggestions from students. In short she levels herself to the students.

        She photocopies materials that are helpful to her students. She manages to stay glamorous despite the so many works she have.

What are things a teacher must possess?

       

A teacher for me a teacher should be a qualified teacher. Meaning she must be a passer of a qualifying exam, anybody can be a teacher, anyone in fact can teach but the problem arouse when the teacher is not professionally prepared.

A teacher must have passion for the profession, also for the students. A qualified teacher in a way is useless if she does not have love for teaching and love for her students. So for me the love for the job and the people you serves is second to the most important.

A teacher must be kind, understanding and work oriented. These qualities are very much important this is so because the relationship between teacher and the students must be develop along the way.

How can I become one?

        This is one question that entails promises and hopes for the future, however, I am in this endeavour because I love to teach. I wanted to become a teacher so I may legally impart my knowledge to the young and earn their thrust and respect later.

        To become a teacher in name is much easier than becoming a teacher with pledge. Why because a teacher by name can be gain throughout time, it is definite and for sacrifices you’ll be able to top it. While a teacher with oath will be best work for a lifetime and most of the times even after you die that’s the time people will realized the things you did for them.

As a Bachelor of Arts in Language and Literature 4^th year major student, I was exposed to several practices which include making of lesson plans, Demo teachings and classroom observations in and outside of the University.

In this manner there are problems and difficulties encountered along the way, a greater patience I discovered in myself. I can therefore understand because I usually look on the positive side rather in the negative aspects of the matter.

I believe that this attitude towards teaching is very useful to be able to go with the students. Strategies are also as important as how the deliver his/her lessons, I the students find the teacher’s strategies working the goal for learning is successful.

The teacher’s relationship with the students would somehow indicate the firmness of their trust to the teacher who delivers the lesson. If the students find the teacher approachable enough and friendly, the tendency would be a freer communications for clarifications, questions and             .

This would eventually help students understand the lesson, I find myself friendly and approachable too with my students so I believe that I can handle classes like this later on. Superiors in any institution especially in an academic institutions demand respect from the inferiors like teachers and students especially. This is so because respect is one great thing they teach with students and to be able to do this they must have to show it themselves.

Showing of respect even to the least, to the poorest and to the youngest is one indication of how others would respect you as an Educator. Every teacher is entitled to prepare many lessons plans as she/he is required to compel with the need of her/his students. The efficiency of a teacher to do this is very essential because almost every night a teacher just like the students should be must make lesson plans to prepare for the next day activities. This is not an easy task though but once you love doing and you give yourself to the needs of yoyr students then you’ll find it an enjoyable thing to do.

        Making lesson plans for me is now an easy thing to do, as a teacher I need to know the lessons my students should have everyday. I have to plan them carefully so that at the end of that particular lesson there must be the learning. I can say that I am efficient in doing lesson plans because I experience preparing for it in just a whole night and even for just a couple of hours.

        Questioning techniques of teachers are truly essential in all classrooms that learning is taking place. This is because this would help teachers find their students in a genuine and spoken way. The teacher would therefore be able to assess his/her students, what they need and how far they have gone through the lesson discussed.

The whole semester is in fact too short to learn everything about the craft of teaching.  Why because this profession demands a number of observation, a wide reading, a many interactions with the students and one of the greatest reasons is that teaching is lifetime learning. Everyday there are many things to learn, and the whole day is quite not enough to learn everything that day teaches.        Luckily, as an ABLL4 student I was given the chance to learn something out of the so many. These major learning are the basic, the very foundation about teaching and because of this I believe that I’ll be able

Characteristics to observe: Communication skills, Questioning techniques, Classroom management, Classroom discipline and strategies.

Communication skill of a teacher is one of the important factors to consider. A teacher must have good communication ability; s/he should therefore remember that speech is an essential part of daily life. Second, the teacher must remember that speech is the process of communicating meaning from one person to another. Third, a teacher must not fail to realize that anyone of the students can become an effective communicator; communication can be in a written or oral form. According to Mrs. Mariles Aquino, she prefers the oral form as she is a speech teacher, she believes in the importance of the above mentioned qualities, in regard she never fails to consider and apply the following on her real classroom teaching. She also admitted that it is her passion to talk; she believes that in this way she can better affect the lives of her students. The observer however, agrees in it since it was sinned during the observation period. She interacts with her students clearly, she gets nearer to her students whenever she can not hear what they are saying in the same way she do this whenever the students can not hear her or she mange to repeat it all over. With her questioning techniques, is awesome because patience in her teachings is visible whenever the students fail to give her the exact o concrete definition she tries to ask another student and she does not forget to give compliments to her students by simply saying “thank you”. Classroom management is as important as disciplining the students, in addition it also entails the over all management of the classroom before the class starts she usually ask the students to pick up pieces of papers, wrappers that has been scattered on the floor, she ask to arrange the chairs properly and she proceeds immediately with the daily routines of praying afterwards she go on with the lesson proper. The direct instruction strategy is mostly observed since it was the teacher who usually provides for her students. Independent type of study is also applied since the teacher manages to give each student their individual assignments and in the ending part of the semester she gave them group activity that will include each member to participate in a one-act play. They are also tasked to make an output to showcase the playa, a portfolio or a simple album.

My Teaching Philosophy

My TEACHING Philosophy

My philosophy of teaching covers five articles with ten sections. Each article serves as an umbrella term for the whole principle. Each article has underlying sections which specifically states the following things about the article and gives primary and accurate reasons and explanations in support of the said article. Article one, states that: The teacher as the role model to her students. Section 0ne: The teacher should teach my students only the best. The teacher as the sole producer of knowledge should act as an editor at the same time. The teacher should carefully process the things that comes in and out of the classroom in this regard, students are believe to be intelligent in their own ways that’s why the teacher should respect this but should be able to detect the mistake in each student and immediately correct whenever possible. Section two states that the teacher should teach the students only the proper. Therefore the teacher is capable of eliminating the mistake and should give the correct. Section three states that the teacher should behave, act and decide properly, according to this article the teacher’s title should be matured enough to handle small and big problems encountered inside the classrooms. The teacher should not cry over little matters instead should be the one to settle conflicts and misunderstanding between the students. Article two states that: The teacher as the explainer of the lesson. The teacher should be a capable one who can teach the lesson with easiness. Therefore the section one of this article states that, the teacher should be a license teacher, someone who is qualified enough to teach and handle students. Article three suggests that a teacher should involve herself with her students in their lessons. Section one of these articles says that the teacher should mingle with her students in this way the teacher will get nearer with her students. Section two of this article suggests that a teacher should be approachable enough so that learning will flow smoothly. Article four says that a teacher should be an enabler, someone who’s capable enough of moulding and shaping her students. Section two states that a teacher should be able to control tha students and the whole classroom. Article five suggests that a teacher should be a qualified manager, section one of this section says that a teacher should be able to manage her class. Section two states that a teacher as a manager should be someone who manages not only the intellectual skills of students but someone capable of managing the atmosphere inside and outside of the school.

As a teacher I have the power to control the future in a manner most basic but difficult. The students, the young generations as the hopes of our world, as a teacher I have the capability and I am someone who is authorized to teach them therefore in my hands lie the freedom and the wonderful future of the next generation.
